On-Demand HR Support for Small Businesses in BC
Most BC small businesses don't have enough HR work to justify a full-time hire. They have enough to get into trouble without one.
On-demand HR support fills that gap. You get a senior HR consultant you can reach when something comes up, whether that's a difficult termination, a complaint, a contract question, or a performance issue, without adding a salary to your payroll.
How it works
You reach out when you need help. Depending on the situation, that might be a phone call, a document review, a drafted letter or policy, or hands-on support through something sensitive like an investigation or termination.
There are three ways to structure it:
Monthly retainer. HR On Demand starts at $500/month for up to 4 hours. You use your hours for whatever comes up that month. Priority response, no long-term commitment, cancel anytime.
Project work. A defined piece of work at a fixed fee agreed before work begins: an employee handbook, an HR audit, a compensation review.
Hourly. For one-off questions and situations. You pay only for the time you use.
What BC small businesses use it for
- Terminations handled properly, including notice and final pay under the BC Employment Standards Act
- Employment contracts and offer letters that actually protect the business
- Bullying and harassment complaints: proper allegation-response procedures set up in advance, and properly documented investigations when a complaint lands
- Performance problems: documentation, improvement plans, difficult conversations
- Policies and handbooks that match current BC requirements
- Hiring: job postings, screening, interviews, onboarding
Why on-demand instead of hiring
A full-time HR manager in BC costs $80,000 or more a year. Most businesses under 100 employees can't fill that person's week. On-demand support gives you the same seniority of advice for a fraction of the cost, and only when there's actual work to do.
AI is pushing in the same direction. More of HR's admin work can now be automated: documentation, drafting, scheduling, summarizing. That shrinks the case for a full-time hire even further, and what's left is the part that needs judgment and experience. Senterra HR helps with both sides: senior advice when it matters, and practical AI workflows that make your HR admin faster.
Handling HR issues without support is where the expensive problems start. A termination handled badly, a contract that doesn't hold up, or a complaint that's ignored can each cost more than years of retainer fees.
